The Promotion of Access to Information Act (PAIA) was passed into law in the year 2000, this is subject to application inside of the Republic of South Africa only.

This Act was passed to:

• Give effect to the constitutional rights of access to information held by the State and
• Any information that is held by another juristic person, and that is required for the exercise or protection of any rights
